A few thoughts on Anniversary Masses and on Mass Cards
1 The practice of saying a Mass for a special intention goes back hundreds of years to a time when people placed offerings on the altar (usually food )which the priest accepted in trust for the needy. This later developed into a money offering, which in turn became part of the priest’s income.
2 A Mass can’t be bought or sold. If a priest signs a Mass card, he promises a Mass will be said for an intention or he may promise to say an Anniversary Mass. A Mass said for John Smith means that during that Mass, John Smith is prayed for and remembered. It does not mean that Mary Murphy who happens to be at that Mass cannot pray through that Mass for her family. To give a Mass offering does not mean control or ownership of the Mass.
3 A priest is only allowed keep one Mass stipend a day. If a priest says two Masses in a day, he is obliged to direct the second stipend to the missions. At the time of a funeral, if a priest signs twenty Mass cards, obviously he isn’t able to say them all, so what is usual is that he would forward them on to the missions.
4 Mass offerings have no set price- it is an offering totally at your discretion.
5 Months Mind and 1st Anniversary Masses are an important way of honouring and remembering our dead. For subsequent anniversaries, maybe we should be moving towards remembering the persons name on the Saturday/Sunday of their anniversary particularly if that person has been dead for some time. This means that a number of people would be remembered at one Mass.

Cardiac Defibrillators
We wish to remind all parishioners that there is a defibrillator situated in Foleys Bar & 1 in the Lighthouse Inn and that 12 parishioners are trained to use these in the event of an emergency arising. Their names and contact numbers are on the church notice boards and cards containing their numbers were also distributed to all households in the parish along with guidelines for calling for help.

IT IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE TO CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES ON 999 or 112
